Motorcycle racing does not get much more exciting for the fans, than at the start of a race when all riders fight to be the first into the corner.
With only throttle control, balance and bravery, the riders in track racing rely on their skill and the trust in their fellow competitors, to race flat out over 4 laps of the track. They achieve speeds of up to 120mph on the Long Track straights and 100mph in the corners, whilst sliding their machines around the bends.
Speedway, Long Track and Grass Track are collectively called Track Racing. They are very similar sports in many respects, but held at different types of venue.
Speedway is raced in Britain and in stadia worldwide, on permanent oval circuits of between 250 and 400 metres.
Long Track is also raced at purpose built oval circuits, predominantly on the Continent, on tracks of between 700 and 1000 metres.
Grass Track racing is very popular in Britain as well as Germany, France, Holland, Belgium, Italy and Australia. It is raced on tracks, not always oval in shape, up to 1000 metres.
Different types of machinery are required for the various circuits.
Speedway tracks are small and very smooth, so the bikes have no gears and only suspension on the front. Long Track and Grass Track circuits are slightly bumpier but much bigger, so they require rear suspension, a 2-speed gearbox and a larger rear wheel for better grip.
All bikes share one thing in common though:
NO BRAKES !
